The term “bigwig” is steeped in history. According to The Oxford English Dictionary it dates back to early 18th century and describes an important person: so named from the large wigs formerly worn by distinguished men.
Law is the only profession that continues this tradition with some barristers still choosing to wear wigs in court today.
